University of Waterloo, in 120 Film

June 17, 2009

Toward the end of 4B, knowing the school is undergoing many changes, many of the student teams and labs would soon be moved to the new E5 building. I really wanted to capture the different parts of university life of 2009. There was something lacking with digital camera, too much focus on aspects such as sharpness, color, and noise of the photo and miss the true objectives.
Perhaps it is the suspense with using film. In the end I decided to use the Yashica Mat-124G for the job. Fully Manual. Click.

John from the Student Machine Shop. Thanks for putting up with all our last minute projects.

Don Fraser at the Kick-off Sports Bar. I still remember the 0/10 he gave me for the C++ assignment. :)

Professor Huissoon during class prof hour.

Aaron, doing what he does best, nothing.

Paul proudly showing off his opinion regarding PDEng in the exit survey.

The lovely mural in POETS.

Andrew posing beside the Formula SAE frame he designed.

The Clean Snowmobile team. We were really scared the night they tried to start it beside the Robotics Lab.

Ben and his sexy ride trying to seduce ARGO team members…

DC Library. I distinctly remember thinking “I should be studying right now…”

Someone drew out the escape path out of MC. The key is not to look at the room numbers.

I guess it is quite fitting to be posting these photos now that we have graduated and got the paper! Hopefully these photos bring back some good memories or provide a glimpse into the 5 years that we spent in University of Waterloo.

Yashica, Round 2

February 12, 2009

The Yashica Mat-124G is back. This time with a bit of everything, still learning all the buttons and knobs.

St.Jacob Farmer’s Market, I learned about the local Shrine club from these gentlemen.

Toques and gloves for the winter. I had intended to focus on the man but he was moving too much for my fingers.

Pizza Nova, our Sunday one-stop with 3 mediums pizzas for $15!

Funny graffiti on the fire hydrant. I feel like that when I have 8:30am class and have to trek through the snow.

A neat display outside of a shop in Unionville.

Another perspective of the fiddler. I think we took a shot of it from all the Medium Format cameras and see how differently they all turn out. Mamiya C330 and Pentax 645.

A spontaneous snapshot of a fastfood stand. I am a big fan of the checkered table cloth.

Second Roll with Pentax 645

January 27, 2009

After developing the First Roll with the Pentax 645, I quickly reloaded with some ISO400 film and tried out some different subject matters. Many of these shots were taken during the Christmas and New Years break. Here is Main Street in Unionville.

Film is fast growing on me and nowadays I find myself reaching for the film camera more than the digital backs. Essentially starting photography since the digital era, it is a strange feeling to be limited by the amount of photos I can take with a camera but to a certain extend it forces me to think carefully and consider the different factors before pushing the shutter.

A quaint little house. I am quite happy with the way this one turned out.

A cellist in the mall.

December 31st, 2009. Guelph.

Ludwik eating his goulash.

Our living room decoration.

Here is one of me with my long hair. This is the first and only time I have grown my hair and it is becoming a problem now that I need a comb.

If you are interested to see more Medium Format or Polaroid shots, you can use the categories at the bottom of the post visit Squinty Eyes!

First Roll with Pentax 645

January 8, 2009

Another exam stress relief purchases, or just another excuse for me to buy new camera gear! I resisted the urge to use it till all the finals were finished and as soon as I got home I sat down, read the manual, played with the different settings and put in a roll of B&W 400 film.

The build quality is superb and even though there is a lot complain about the buttons I found it quite easy to access and use. So far the metering is dead-on but I haven’t tried some tricky scenarios yet. The viewfinder is large and bright but since it is only manual focus I have to focus my subject in the center.

A classic barbershop with interesting displays on the side.

Intersection of Dundas and Spadina.

I wish this one was in color. The streets and posters had so much festive colors while the homeless man was begging for money….

A dark alley with very strong reflections.

My high school shop teachers, Mr.Kodai and Big John.

At a Chinese grocery store. I got kicked out by another one when I took out the camera!

I realized mid-way that I should learn more about the B&W color theory but so far it hasn’t been too bad!
